ANIKE FOUNDATION HELPS LISELI INITIATIVE SECURE GRANT FOR A RURAL DRILLING PROJECT IN ZAMBIA
Introduction
Anike Foundation assisted one of its partner organizations, Liseli Initiative, with writing a proposal and obtaining a grant from Kitchen Table Charities Trust to drill a borehole that provides access to clean water for rural villagers in Zambia. This is the third grant that Anike Foundation has assisted Liseli Initiative in securing.
Who is Liseli Initiative?
Liseli Initiative is a non-governmental organization that operates in the city of Livingstone, Zambia. Its main objective is to provide quality education and mentorship to younger generations and change their lives for the better.
MAWAWA VILLAGE DRILLING PROJECT
Background
The drilling project was conducted in Mawawa, a village of around 1,300 people located approximately 65 kilometers from Livingstone.
Before this drilling project, the primary sources of water for the people of Mawawa village were a shared stream with Bwaatika village and shallow wells. The shared stream is contaminated with bacteria and parasites that have caused harmful diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever to develop among the people of Mawawa village. Not only is the stream unsafe to drink from, it is also a lengthy walking distance.
The Drilling Operation
A 70-meter-deep borehole was drilled in Mawawa village as a result of this project. A hand pump was attached to the borehole after it was completed, allowing the villagers to access the water easily.
SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROJECT
With help from Anike Foundation, the generous support of Kitchen Table Charities Trust, and Liseli Initiative’s dedication to this project, the Mawawa village drilling project was a success. It stands as an example of the impactful accomplishments that collaboration can bring about for communities in need. The village headman in Mawawa was so pleased with the outcome of the project that he is now advocating for borehole drilling projects for neighboring villages.
CONCLUSIONS
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many people around the world lack access to safe and clean drinking water. Without clean water, dangerous waterborne diseases can develop, which can even lead to death. The Mawawa village drilling project provided a viable water source to prevent these negative consequences for over 1,000 people. This project will help to improve the health and well-being of the local community and also contribute to the economic development of the area by reducing the time spent by villagers in search of water. The borehole drilled in Mawawa village not only changed the lives of the people residing there, but also inspired future borehole drilling projects in neighboring areas.
